Farmhouse bedroom ideas: modern and rustic, on real bedrooms

Farmhouse can mean a bright white bedroom with a little wood, or a cabin wrapped in old boards. Here are real bedrooms redesigned both ways, so you can see which one you'd actually sleep in.

What makes a bedroom farmhouse? Wood you can see, such as shiplap, whitewashed planks or reclaimed boards, plus a wood bed, soft neutral bedding, a jute rug and lantern-style lights. Modern farmhouse keeps the room light, with white walls and wood as an accent. Rustic farmhouse goes darker, with reclaimed wood on the walls and the ceiling.

Modern farmhouse bedroom ideas

Light walls, wood as an accent. Slide to compare: real Unsplash bedrooms on the left, the DecorAI app's Farmhouse results on the right, with nothing retouched.

Before: a new-build bedroom with a tray ceiling, grey upholstered bed, framed wall mouldings and beige carpet After: the same bedroom in modern farmhouse style with whitewashed plank walls and ceiling, a slatted wood headboard, lantern pendants and a jute rug BeforeFarmhouse
1. New-build bedroom → whitewashed planks. Pale planks cover the walls and the tray ceiling, a slatted wood headboard replaced the upholstered one, and a jute rug sits over a new plank floor. The two pendant lights stayed, now as lanterns. It's the lightest farmhouse result we got. Photo: Elias Storm on Unsplash.
Before: a bedroom with a carved antique bed, an oval-mirror wardrobe, a wooden chair and white walls After: the same bedroom with white shiplap walls, a painted reclaimed-plank bed, barn-style wardrobe doors and a fan with a lantern light BeforeFarmhouse
2. Antique bedroom → white shiplap and painted wood. White shiplap replaced the plain walls. The carved bed became painted reclaimed planks in blue and rust, and the oval-mirror wardrobe turned into barn-style doors. The door, the chair and the room's shape stayed. 3. Patterned bedroom → whitewash with a little rustic. Whitewashed reclaimed boards line the walls, the window got a buffalo-check shade, and the bed and nightstand are now reclaimed wood. Soft white bedding keeps it light. It sits between modern and rustic. Photo: Francesca Tosolini on Unsplash.

Rustic farmhouse bedroom ideas

More wood, darker tones, more texture. These went much further from where they started.

Before: a simple bedroom with a black bed, a dark wood floor and a blind over the window After: the same bedroom in rustic farmhouse style with a grey reclaimed-wood wall, beadboard, a lantern pendant and a reclaimed plank bed BeforeFarmhouse
4. Dark modern bedroom → reclaimed feature wall. Grey reclaimed wood covers the bed wall, the window wall got beadboard, and a lantern pendant hangs from the ceiling. The bed is reclaimed planks with a few painted boards. Window and door stayed. Photo: Sam Moghadam on Unsplash.
Before: a cottage-style bedroom with a grey-washed bed, a long dresser and a ceiling fan After: the same bedroom in rustic farmhouse style with reclaimed wood walls and ceiling, a beam, a painted storage bench and a wreath BeforeFarmhouse
5. Cottage bedroom → full cabin. Reclaimed wood on every wall and on the ceiling, with a beam across it. A painted storage bench sits at the foot of the bed, and a wreath hangs on the wall. The window and the ceiling fan stayed. This is as rustic as it gets. Photo: Brian Wangenheim on Unsplash.

Watch for fake signs

Farmhouse rooms often have word signs on the wall, and the AI likes to add them. It can't write, though. In this master bedroom it hung a big sign above the bed with letters that spell nothing. Other parts of the design are fine: reclaimed wood walls and ceiling, a jute rug and a painted nightstand.

If you show a design to a carpenter or a partner, crop or ignore the sign. In a real room, a sign with one plain word, or none at all, looks better anyway.

Farmhouse bedroom decor checklist

  • One wood surface: a shiplap or plank wall behind the bed.
  • A wood bed, slatted or plank, or a simple iron frame.
  • Neutral layered bedding: white linen, a knit throw, a few pillows.
  • A jute or wool rug under the bed.
  • Lantern or barn-style lights instead of a flat ceiling light.
  • A bench or chest at the foot of the bed.
  • One or two wall pieces: a wreath, a mirror with a wood frame, a simple print.

Farmhouse master bedroom ideas

A big master bedroom can take the heavier rustic look, because the wood has room to breathe. Rooms 5 and the master bedroom above show it: wood on the walls and ceiling still feels open in a large space.

Fill the extra space with a reading chair by the window and a bench at the foot of the bed, rather than more furniture against the walls. In a small bedroom, stay with the modern version and keep the wood to one wall.

Farmhouse bedroom questions

What is the difference between modern and rustic farmhouse?

Modern farmhouse is light: white or whitewashed walls, wood as an accent, black or brass details. Rustic farmhouse is darker and heavier, with reclaimed wood on the walls and ceiling and older-looking furniture.

What colours work in a farmhouse bedroom?

White, cream and warm greige as the base, natural wood tones, and black for metal details. For a little colour, try muted blue or sage, like the painted planks in room 2.

How do I make a farmhouse bedroom cozy, not cluttered?

Get the warmth from materials, not objects: a wood or plank wall, a chunky knit throw and a jute rug. Keep the wall decor to one or two pieces.

What goes at the foot of a farmhouse bed?

A bench or a low chest. It gives you a place to sit and to store blankets, like the painted storage bench in room 5.

Can AI show my bedroom in farmhouse style?

Yes. Snap the bedroom, choose Farmhouse with the Bedroom room type, and the app paints shiplap or reclaimed wood onto your real walls. The first two tries are free.
