Boho living room ideas: 6 real rooms, before and after

Six ordinary living rooms, from a 1970s den to a plain new build, each redesigned in boho style. The same style comes out differently in every room: modern, cozy, colourful or dark. Find the version that suits your space.

What makes a living room boho? Natural textures (rattan, cane, jute and wood), warm earthy colours, layered patterned textiles and plenty of plants. A boho room should look collected over time, not bought as a matching set. You can go full colour, or keep a calm neutral base and add just a few boho pieces. That second version is usually called modern boho.

1. 1970s den → natural, earthy boho

The carpet became a large jute rug with a dark border, and the leather ottomans became a rattan coffee table and a cushioned rattan bench. The AI replaced the stone fireplace with a tall rattan cabinet, wove texture into the ceiling and filled the corners with plants. Rust and terracotta cushions warm up the light sofa.

Steal this idea: swap heavy leather or upholstered pieces for one or two rattan ones. It's the fastest way to make a room read as boho.

Before: dated living room with bright orange curtains, green wooden chairs and a tube TV After: colourful boho with sheer orange curtains, a green velvet rattan chair, a woven coffee table, a mustard sofa and patterned cushions BeforeBoho

2. Orange curtains → colourful boho

Here the AI kept the bold orange curtains, made them lighter and sheer, and built the room around them. A green velvet chair on a rattan frame, a mustard sofa, cushions in teal and blue patterns, a woven coffee table and a palm-leaf print give a warm, colourful boho look. The old tube TV is gone.

Steal this idea: keep one bold colour you already own and choose everything else to go with it. Orange, green and mustard work well together in boho.

Before: 1970s family room with wood-panelled walls, a beamed ceiling and black leather sofas After: dark, moody boho with the same beams, a dark brown sectional layered with patterned throws and pink cushions, a rattan lamp and plants BeforeBoho

3. Dark wood family room → moody boho

Dark rooms don't have to fight the style. The AI kept the beams and the dark tones, and swapped the black leather for a deep brown sectional piled with patterned throws and pink and red cushions. A woven ceiling, a rattan lamp and plants add texture, so the room feels warm rather than heavy.

Steal this idea: in a dark room, add texture instead of fighting the colour. Throws, woven baskets and plants make dark wood feel cozy.

Before: older living area with a black wood stove, a braided oval rug and wooden rocking chairs After: cozy boho with arched doorways, a round jute rug with a woven pouf, a rattan armchair, hanging plants and a woven pendant light BeforeBoho

4. Old farmhouse living area → cozy boho

The braided rug became a round jute rug with a woven pouf, and the rocking chairs became a rattan armchair with a white cushion. The AI softened the doorways into arches, hung plants and a woven pendant light, and added rattan shelving and a patterned runner leading into the next room.

Steal this idea: a round rug and a woven pendant light are two of the cheapest ways to make a room feel softer and cozier.

Before: plain living room with two matching beige sofas, grey-green walls and a white marble floor After: modern boho with two neutral rattan-frame sofas, colourful cushions, a large jute rug, a woven pendant, a straw hat on the wall and plant shelves BeforeBoho

5. Plain new build → modern boho

This is the clearest modern boho example. The two sofas kept their place and neutral colour but got rattan frames and a few colourful cushions. A big jute rug covers the cold marble floor, and a woven pendant, a straw hat and small plant shelves decorate the walls. The base stays calm; boho comes from texture.

Steal this idea: if your furniture is new and neutral, don't replace it. Add a jute rug, cushions and woven wall decor, and you're most of the way there.

Before: bright open-plan living room with a cream leather sectional, a glass coffee table and a dark wood TV unit After: light, minimal boho with a cream sectional, a rattan coffee table, a slatted rattan TV cabinet, a striped rug and plants on open shelves BeforeBoho

6. Open-plan room → light, minimal boho

The heavy dark TV unit became a slatted rattan cabinet, the glass table a low rattan one, and a striped rug ties the seating area together. Open shelves with plants and rattan chairs in the dining area carry the look through the whole open space, while the cream sectional keeps it bright and simple.

Steal this idea: in an open-plan space, repeat one material, here rattan, in each zone, so the living and dining areas feel like one room.

Modern boho vs classic boho

Both are boho. The difference is how much colour, pattern and stuff you use.

Boho living room decor checklist

You don't need all of these. Pick four or five and the room will read as boho.

  • A jute or woven rug, as big as the seating area. It does more than any other single piece.
  • One rattan or cane chair, or a rattan coffee table.
  • Plants at different heights: one tall floor plant, a few on shelves, one hanging.
  • Patterned cushions and a throw, in two or three colours that repeat.
  • A woven pendant or paper lamp for warm, soft light.
  • Natural wall decor: a woven hanging, a straw hat or a basket wall.
  • A pouf or floor cushions for extra, relaxed seating.
  • Baskets to hide clutter, so the room looks layered, not messy.

How to make a boho living room cozy

  1. Layer textiles. A throw on the sofa, cushions in two sizes and a second small rug on top of the big one.
  2. Use warm light. Choose warm-white bulbs and several low lamps instead of one bright ceiling light.
  3. Bring the seating down. A pouf, floor cushions or a low coffee table make the room feel relaxed.
  4. Add texture to dark rooms instead of painting them white, like room 3.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Patterns with nothing in common. Repeat at least one colour across them.
  • A rug that's too small. It should reach under the front legs of the sofa.
  • Buying a matching "boho set". Mix old and new, or it looks like a catalogue page.

Boho living room questions

What defines boho chic in living room design?

Natural textures (rattan, jute, wood), warm earthy colours, layered patterned textiles, lots of plants and pieces that look collected over time rather than bought as a set.

What colours work in a boho living room?

Warm, earthy colours: cream and sand as a base, with terracotta, rust, mustard, olive green and warm wood. Teal or deep blue works as an accent, like the cushions in room 2.

What is the difference between boho and modern boho?

Classic boho is colourful and layered with many patterns. Modern boho keeps a calm neutral base and clean-lined furniture, and adds boho through a few natural textures, plants and one or two patterns.

Can a small living room be boho?

Yes. Keep the walls light, use one large jute rug instead of several small ones, choose open rattan furniture that you can see through, and hang plants or put them on shelves to save floor space.

Can I mix boho with farmhouse or minimalist style?

Yes, both mixes are popular. Boho farmhouse adds rattan and plants to white walls and rustic wood. Minimalist boho, like room 6, keeps the room light and adds only a few natural textures. See both styles on one room on our interior design styles page.
