How does AI kitchen design work? You upload one photo of your kitchen and choose a style. The AI redraws the photo: new cabinet doors and colours, counters, backsplash, walls, floor and lighting, while the windows and the basic layout stay where they are. In DecorAI you also tell it the room is a kitchen, so it keeps kitchen furniture. Your first 2 designs are free, with no login.

One kitchen, four new looks

The fairest way to compare styles is on the same kitchen. This bright L-shaped kitchen with a small dining nook went through four styles. Same photo, same windows, very different rooms.

The test kitchen before: white shaker cabinets, a wood-look counter, a brown tile backsplash, taupe walls and a small table with two chairs

Scandinavian version: light wood floor, white panelled walls, a utensil rail and a pale wood table
Scandinavian: light wood, white panels, a utensil rail
Mid-century modern version: wood-slat walls, white cabinets, a round pedestal table and moulded wood chairs
Mid Modern: wood-slat walls, round pedestal table
Minimalist version: flat white cabinets, a plain grey splashback, a white table and nothing on the walls
Minimalistic: flat white doors, plain splashback
Eclectic version: a green tile backsplash, striped wallpaper, hanging copper pans and an orange-striped wall panel

Before: dated U-shaped oak kitchen with a fluorescent ceiling panel and a black-and-white vinyl floor After: Scandinavian kitchen with light wood cabinets, open shelves, a skylight and track lights BeforeScandinavian
1. 1980s oak U-shape → Scandinavian. Orange oak became pale wood, the fluorescent panel became a skylight with track lights, and open shelves replaced one wall cabinet. Photo: Brian Wangenheim / Unsplash
Before: empty galley kitchen with honey-oak cabinets and beige tile counters After: neoclassical galley kitchen with ornate white cabinets, marble counters and floor, a moulded ceiling and an arched opening BeforeNeoclassical
2. Empty oak galley → Neoclassical. The biggest change of the six: ornate white cabinets, marble counters and floor, a moulded ceiling, and the doorway at the end turned into an arch. Photo: Brian Wangenheim / Unsplash
Before: single-wall kitchen with grey lower and white upper cabinets and two small windows After: coastal kitchen with pale blue planked cabinets, a blue beadboard backsplash, an apron sink and open shelves BeforeBeach
3. Single-wall kitchen → Coastal. Pale blue planked cabinets, blue beadboard behind the counter, an apron-front sink and open shelves with white bowls. The layout didn't move at all. Photo: Point3D Commercial Imaging / Unsplash
Before: small kitchen with white cabinets, a grey mosaic backsplash, a gas hob and a washing machine After: Japanese-style kitchen with pale natural wood cabinets and a wood backsplash, with the washing machine kept BeforeJapanese
4. Small kitchen → Japanese. Pale natural wood for the cabinets and backsplash, a calm, warm look. This time the washing machine stayed, which isn't always the case (see below). Photo: Evy Prentice / Unsplash
Before: kitchen with glossy cherry-wood cabinets, a beige granite counter and a diamond-pattern tile backsplash After: calmer kitchen with matte walnut cabinets, plain white square tiles and a utensil rail BeforeMinimalistic
5. Glossy cherry → Minimalistic. A gentler change: the cabinets stayed wood but turned matte walnut, the busy diamond tiles became plain white squares, and the counter was cleared. Photo: Andrew Kayani / Unsplash

What AI kitchen design changes, and what it keeps

We ran 22 kitchen designs on 9 different kitchens. The pattern was clear:

Usually kept

  • The windows and the overall shape of the room.
  • The layout: a U-shape stays a U-shape, a galley stays a galley.
  • Where the cooker, sink and fridge sit, in most results.

Changed

  • Cabinet doors, colour and handles.
  • Counters, backsplash, wall colour and the floor.
  • Lighting and the ceiling, sometimes a lot (a skylight in example 1).
  • Decor: boards, plants, pans and stools.

Where it guesses

  • Appliances can swap. In one farmhouse test the AI turned a washing machine into a second oven. If an appliance matters, check it in the result.
  • No sizes. The AI doesn't know your kitchen is 3 metres long, so a new island in a design may not fit in real life.
  • No exact control. You choose a whole style, not "just paint the cabinets green". Try a few styles and pick the closest.
  • Not real products. The cabinets and taps are drawn by AI, so you won't find that exact model in a shop.

How to use an AI kitchen design for a real remodel

  1. Try 3 styles on the same photo. Pick the one you'd still like in five years, not the most dramatic one.
  2. Name what changed. Write down the cabinet colour, counter material, backsplash and lighting from the design. That list is your brief.
  3. Sort by job size. New handles and lighting are small jobs; new counters and a backsplash are medium; new cabinets, or moving the sink, are the big ones.
  4. Keep the plumbing where it is, if you can. The AI designs above mostly kept the sink in place, and so should you: it's usually the easiest way to keep a remodel simple.
  5. Show the design to a kitchen fitter. A picture explains the look faster than words. They'll measure and tell you what is possible.

AI kitchen design vs a kitchen planner

They answer different questions. Use AI to choose the look, and a planner to check it fits.

AI kitchen design questions

Can AI design my kitchen for free?

Yes, to start. DecorAI for Android gives you 2 free kitchen designs with no sign-up. After that, PRO costs $3.99 a week or $24.99 a year in the US for up to 20 designs a day.

Can AI redesign my kitchen from a photo?

Yes. Upload one photo, choose a style and the room type Kitchen, and the AI redraws the same kitchen in that style. It keeps the windows and the basic layout and changes cabinets, counters, backsplash, walls, floor and lighting.

Do I need to log in?

Not with DecorAI. It's an Android app that uses an anonymous ID, so there's no account, email or password.

Which style suits a small kitchen?

Light styles make a small kitchen feel bigger: Scandinavian, Minimalistic and Beach (coastal) all use pale cabinets and plain backsplashes, like examples 1 and 3 above.

Will an AI kitchen design give me measurements?

No. It shows a look, not a plan. It doesn't know the size of your kitchen, so you still need measurements and a quote before you buy cabinets or counters.
